Street Food Thursdays

Berlin may be famed for its currywurst and doner but its street food scene is far more evolved than first meets the eye – Street Food Thursdays are a testimony to this. Held every Thursday from 5-10pm at Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg, dozens of food stands proffer cuisine from every corner of the globe, from northern German cheese and meats to Argentinian empanadas.

The atmosphere inside the market hall is vibrant, Berlin inhabitants and visitors of all ages milling about beneath the dim glow of lightbulb bunting, or huddled around one of many wooden tables to share culinary gems with friends and strangers alike.

There are foods to cater to all tastes, highlights including oysters and champagne from the local Saveur Champagne and delightfully delicate smoked fish from GLUT & SPÄNE, whose traditional smoking methods create the most sumptuous salmon fillets. Also not to be missed are the more unusual offerings such as fawn, slow cooked for 16 hours and served on a bed of tomato and onion on brown bread, peppered with parsley and served with a side of radish cream cheese.

Herbivores are also catered for with a range of offerings including vegan burgers, freshly prepared coconut juice and a cornucopia of fresh produce. Finish your meal (or, if you are wise, several smaller meals) with dessert in the form of Rosa Canina’s organic ice cream or an indulgent slice of Barbara’s Küche, but make sure you leave room to sample the wonderfully rich red ale from Heiden Peters’, a petite bar supplied by its very own Markthalle brewery.
