Getting To Know Our Kiez – Gallery Schrill Berlin.
Accessory shop owner Irene Schweitzer loves to say that Gallery Schrill has been “Trend resistant since 1981.” Shedding convention, you won’t find any big name designer labels here as she purchases her fun and quirky merchandise regardless of whether or not it’s fashionable.
Her store’s now a permanent fixture along West Berlin’s famed Bleibtreustraße, one of the locations where Liza Minnelli was filmed in Cabaret.
Here you’ll find a plethora of accessories sourced from über cool cities like Paris, London and New York. Gallery Schrill stocks anything from vintage inspired sunglasses, to bright and colorful earrings, to hats and bow ties and amazingly, the biggest selection of cufflinks in Europe containing over 300 different designs. Regularly refreshing their collection, it’s unlikely you’ll ever be able to find the same item twice.
Irene invites her customers to have a sense of humor when they visit the store and warns it’s not a place the conservative but rather for those who want to find items that will make them stand out from the crowd. For example, it would take a bold man to carry off these heart and high heel inspired cufflinks!
She recalled the early days when her shop first opened and the occupied Berlin was still very much a divided city. In an attempt to create a cheerful space in an otherwise grey, desolate area she painted the outside of her store with bold bright colors. The neighbors did not take kindly to this and called the police to complain on numerous occasions.
Over the years, Gallery Schrill has gained enough notoriety to attract visitors from the world over and even celebrities like Sylvester Stallone and Isabella Rossellini. Irene also regularly helps dress stars for red carpet events and was featured in a German documentary earlier this year.
While she could easily expand her store into a bigger operation, Irene and her partner prefer running their small shop together with no other employees and enjoying personal interactions with their customers. They welcome you to stop by and say hello!
