Das Literaturhaus: an oasis of calm just off the Ku’Damm
Berlin’s Literaturhaus is an institution in City West. The beautiful listed building, located on Fasanenstraße just off the busy Kurfürstendamm shopping boulevard, has had many uses since it was built at the end of the 19th century (including soup kitchen, brothel, discotheque) but since 1986 it has been a home for contemporary literature.
In the cellar is a little bookshop, while above, the café-restaurant, which also occupies the conservatory and gardens, offers a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere. It is possible to take a literary tour in and around the house, and there are also regular readings, discussions and exhibitions from important figures in contemporary German and international literature. The house even has its own series of works published under the title “Texts from the Literaturhaus Berlin”.
