Berlin Music Week 2013

The annual Berlin Music Week kicks off this Wednesday 4th September. Aimed at promoting Berlin as an international music capital, it brings together the movers and shakers of the industry for conferences and workshops, and also caters to the general public with live music, club nights and events.

The week culminates in the  huge Berlin Festival at the weekend (6th and 7th September) with Björk and Blur headlining a star studded line-up. What sets Berlin Festival apart from every other major music festival is not the big name acts, but its two unique locations: the former airport in Tempelhof, which was built by the Nazis, later became the setting for the iconic Berlin Airlift and is now used to host big art, fashion and music events; and Arena Berlin, a former bus depot now home to a club, restaurant and a floating swimming pool (the Badeschiff).

The live acts will be performing on Tempelhof’s disused runways, after which an impressive line-up of DJs, including Justice, Boys Noize and Röyksopp, will keep the party going until the morning at Arena Berlin. Further highlights include Berlin’s very own electro-pop band MIA.; Britain’s most successful pop duo The Pet Shop Boys; the pioneers of the ‘shoegazing’ rock sub-genre My Bloody Valentine; and Count von Bothmer performing a live piano accompaniment to the silent film “Berlin: Symphony of a Metropolis”. An extremely diverse festival, much like the city’s music scene itself. The smaller rooftop festival “Auf den Dächern Festival” organised by online music platform tape.tv is also worth a visit.
