Bar jeder Vernunft
For the past 20 years Bar jeder Vernunft has established itself as a Berlin entertainment institution. Hidden in a park a short distance from the Ku’damm, Bar jeder Vernunft provides a magical experience for all guests in an Art Nouveau Spiegeltent from the turn of the century. Aside from the location and unique decor, visitors can enjoy world class entertainment and delicious cuisine.

The most charming aspects of Bar jeder Vernunft is the preserved Spiegeltent (mirror tent) from 1912 which is home to the caberet theater. The mirror tent is a circular venue covered in red velvet and infinite mirrors that makes the venue seem endless. One of the few mirror tents still left in the world, this one was originally used as a dancehall in Holland. Today it is the mecca for some of the best performers and comedians who entertain audiences seven nights a week.

I visited the cabaret theater to watch Gayle Tufts perform her one woman show, “Some like it Heiß!” Gayle Tufts is an American entertainer who has lived in Berlin since 1991. Her live show includes singing, dancing and comedy in German and English with the assistance of her trusty pianist. The ambiance for the evening was set while the audience waited for Gayle to take the stage, famous songs about heat, fire and flames played in the background.That night we joined Gayle as she described in self deprecating humor, her latest chapter in life, the infamous menopause. Admittedly this really isn’t a topic that inspires women to sing but Gayle Tufts handled it cleverly and made it entertaining for both men and women. I was most impressed by Gayle’s ability to switch between English and German, showing amazing linguistic agility performing the entire show in Denglisch. It was a great show complete with laughs and tears, in between high kicks and roaring solos, Gayle shared intimate excerpts from her latest book of the same name.
